there's a vote under way for hagel in terms of secretary of defense. what do we know? >> reporter: that's right. under way as we speak. this is a vote to end the republican filibuster on chuck hagel's nomination to be the next secretary of defense. ten days ago we had the same exact vote and it failed. republicans, enough republicans blocked it so that the filibuster continued. but democrats in the white house only needed one more vote and we think that that is there, at least one more vote. so we believe at the end of this vote, which has approximately ten minutes left, chuck hagel will -- the way will be cleared for him to be secretary of defense. unclear if they'll have a final vote today or wait until tomorrow. but we're watching this to see exactly how it goes down. but one thing we did hear before this started was the republicans who are ardently opposed to him say that even if he is nominated, which i think he will be, he will be too battered and bruised to be an effective secretary of defense. they did one last at least public ask of the president to withdraw h

this is tom friedman, who is advocating hagel. and then his opponents say he's not mainstream. why would you want a guy who is not mainstream? in charge of one of the most important agencies, the defense department? he's opposed to sanctions against iran. he's also opposed to war. well, if you don't believe in sanctions and you don't believe in war, what do you think we should do as it relates to stopping iran from getting the nuclear bombs? he believes that there should be much greater light distance, separation between israel and the united states. so as to make the arab countries more friendly to us. they want to kill us. they want to kill christians and jews and they say they're going to convert either voluntarily or by force. and that's been their history. so why would we want to genesis, which is really the way i feel he's acting, the only democratic state in that area that we can rely on, israel, in exchange for having the sheiks and the kings and the presidents in egypt and lebanon and syria and iraq toasting with orange juice hagel's appointment. >> in terms of the isr

that vote on chuck hagel's confirmation will not take place tomorrow. we'll see what happens. >>> here in the united states, the most insulting gesture you can make towards anyone involves very often your middle finger. but in the middle east, it's throwing your shoe at somebody. the sole of your shoe touches all of the filth so showing your shoe at someone makes you think think that they are just as bad as all of that filth or worse. president bush had a shoe thrown at him in baghdad. or earlier iraqis slapped a statue of suddam hussein. the latest to have a shoe thrown at him is ahmadinejad in egypt. >> there are probably worst insalts but throwing a shoe at someone is one of the big ones. it means throwing dirt, filth and whatever else you may have stepped on at someone you don't like and that's exactly what happened to iranian president ahmadinejad when visiting a moss mosque. it's difficult to see exactly what happened. but if you look closely, you see president ahmadinejad walking through a large crowd, greeting people. all of a sudden, you see so
